This is the highest point of the chart, called the Midheaven. It holds ambition, the work you are known for, your standing in the world, and the people who have authority over you.
I think of it as the house of what you are building with your life, out where people can see it.
How it was read before
Older astrology gave this house to Capricorn and Saturn and called it the house of business and honour. It was read for fame, position, promotion and authority.
The old books argued about parents. Some gave the fourth house to the father and the tenth to the mother. Others read both houses for either parent, and astrologers in the 1920s still could not prove either way.
For a nation the tenth house stood for those in power: presidents, kings and anyone at the top.
