What it stands for
Mercury is curiosity, quick wit, memory and the words you use. It also rules trade and travel, the comings and goings of ideas and people.
It takes on the colour of whatever is near it. In each sign it finds a different way of expressing itself.
At its best it is bright, persuasive and full of ideas. Its challenge is scatter: getting bored, leaving things half-finished, promising more than you have thought through. The older books said steadiness helps it most. Picture the plan before you speak.
How it was read before
Mercury is Hermes, messenger of the gods, with his staff wound with two snakes. In myth he loved to play tricks, and he became the patron of merchants, travellers and lawyers.
The planet shares its name with quicksilver, the metal that rises and falls with the temperature. The older books said the Mercury mind does the same, changing with its surroundings.
It never travels far from the Sun, so it is always close to your core self.
