The fourth sign

Cancer is water that remembers. It feels deeply, protects what it loves, and changes things slowly, the way the sea shapes a shore.

What the sign is like
Cancer is cardinal water, water at its most active. The older books pictured the sea against a cliff. No single wave does much. Over time the shape of the land changes.
That is how Cancer works. It is patient, it goes to the root of things, and it does not give up because of one rebuff. Its influence is often felt long after people thought it had gone.
This is the sign of memory. It loves the past and can make it glow. It feels hurt keenly, and it can swing between a big picture of itself and a low mood. It needs to feel understood to do its best work.
With other people
Cancer loves with its whole heart and wants very much to please. It needs people around it who share its values, and it struggles in conflict.
The older books advised Cancer to keep its own independence, even with the people it loves most, and to choose its company with care.
They paired Cancer with the other water signs, Scorpio and Pisces. With Aries, Libra and Capricorn they said Cancer should protect its own sense of self.
How it was read before
The older books said Cancer has two very different faces, more different than any other sign. One is active and tenacious, with a visionary streak. The other is quiet and reflective, like still water showing back the Moon.
They gave the stronger face to Jupiter, which they placed at its best in Cancer, and the quieter one to the Moon, the sign's ruler, who shines with borrowed light.
They also corrected an old saying. Water does not really take the shape of its cup, they wrote. All it asks is to lie level.
Its tarot card
The card for Cancer is The Chariot, and the 1927 book names it.
The book read the charioteer as a messenger bringing something new into the world, carried on images from the past. I read The Chariot as movement and determination. For Cancer it says: you can carry your history with you and still move forward.
Sit with this
Feeling deeply is how you know what matters.
Sit with this: what are you carrying from the past that still keeps you safe, and what are you ready to set down?
Home can be a place you build, not only one you came from.
