What the sign is like

Libra is often painted as soft. The older books disagreed. It is cardinal air, the active kind, and under the gentle surface there is a strong purpose.

Libra notices when something is out of balance before anyone else does, and it sets about putting it right. Its mind always finds the other side of an argument, which makes it fair and free of prejudice.

Beauty, to Libra, is the right proportion of things. Disorder and unfairness upset it deeply. The challenge is the weighing itself. Libra can keep balancing so long that it never acts.

With other people

Libra reads people well and adapts with grace. It persuades rather than forces, and wins respect by being fair.

It can seem a little detached, even with people it loves, because it keeps thinking about them as well as feeling. Letting the feelings show helps it stay close to people.

The older books paired Libra with the other air signs, Gemini and Aquarius. With Aries, Cancer and Capricorn they said Libra can bend too far, then dig in, and lose sight of itself.

How it was read before

Venus rules Libra and Saturn is at its strongest here. The older books said this gives Libra two faces: a gracious Venus one, and a more strategic, reserved Saturn one.

They compared air to the wind, calm until it becomes a storm. Quiet does not mean powerless.

They also told the old story of the donkey that starved between two equal bales of hay because it could not choose. That was their warning about Libra's scales.

Its tarot card

The card for Libra is Justice, and the 1927 book names it.

The book linked the sign to the feather of the Egyptian goddess of truth, worn to show that power was being used rightly. I read Justice as truth, balance and accountability. What you give out tends to come back to you.
