Five of Cups, from the 1909 Rider-Waite-Smith deck: a figure in a black cloak bows his head over three spilled cups, two full cups standing behind him and a bridge leading to a house across the river.

Five of Cups

Cups, V · Water

Five of Cups means grief over something real that was lost, with your eyes on the spilled cups and two still standing behind you. Reversed, you are beginning to turn around and see what remains.

I'm not going to rush you through this one. Sit with it. The two cups behind you are real, and they'll still be standing when you can turn around.

Five of Cups upright

This is grief and I won't dress it up. Three cups spilled, and you're standing over them. Stand there as long as you need. You lost something real: a person, a relationship, a version of your life you'd already pictured. Two cups are still standing behind you. I'm telling you that because I can see them, and I know you can't turn around yet. Nobody's rushing you.

Five of Cups reversed

You're beginning to turn around. The loss is just as real. What's changing is where your eyes are, and that's perspective, which is where healing starts. Forgiveness often comes up here, of someone else or of yourself, and it's usually the second one that takes longer.

In love

Heartbreak that's still tender, or regret about how something ended. Be gentle with yourself in it. If this is about someone who passed, I'll say what I believe, which is that the body is temporary and the soul and the love aren't.

In work and money

Something was lost. A deal fell through, or money went out and didn't come back. It's a setback and it stings. What's left is still workable, and I'd look at that part when you're ready.

As advice

Mourn for as long as you need. When you are ready, turn around gently and look at the two cups still standing.

Yes or no?

No, the Five of Cups is a card of loss and regret, so this is a time to grieve before moving forward. A single card shows a lean, never a promise of how things turn out.

For yourself

You're allowed to mourn what didn't happen. You grieve because you loved something, and loving it was never the mistake.
