The Empress, from the 1909 Rider-Waite-Smith deck: a woman crowned with twelve stars rests on cushions in a field of ripening wheat, a heart-shaped shield with the sign of Venus beside her and a forest and waterfall behind.

The Empress

Major Arcana, III · Earth · angel number 333

The Empress means abundance, warmth and creativity, a time when the things you care for grow and ripen at their own pace. Reversed, it shows someone who has poured everything into others and needs to refill their own cup.

Oh, somebody's about to be fed, finally. Mother energy, warmth, creativity. Let it in.

  • abundance
  • nurturing energy
  • feminine power
  • creativity
  • emotional warmth
  • mother energy

From Rosemary's own notes on the card.

The Empress upright

She's sitting on cushions in a wheat field with a river running behind her, and nothing about her is in a hurry. Abundance, and a lot of warmth. The Empress is nurturing energy, feminine power, creativity, sensuality, deep emotional connection. This is mother energy, so she can represent pregnancy or fertility, and just as often she's a creative project, a home, or a relationship that feels like being fed. 333 belongs with her for me: mind, body and spirit lining up, spiritual growth, creativity, expansion.

The Empress reversed

When she's reversed I usually see a woman who has poured herself into everybody else and has nothing left in the pot. Sometimes it's the body that's run down, sometimes it's creative energy with nowhere to go. Her abundance starts moving again when some of it comes back to her, so feed yourself first for once.

In love

Warm, affectionate, romantic. Passion and intimacy are in this card, and if you're asking about a person, the energy I'm picking up from them is tender and real.

In work and money

Abundance, and creative work that pays. Things grow here when you tend them, so this is building something and letting it ripen, and the wheat in that field didn't come up overnight.

As advice

Look after yourself the way you look after others. Rest, eat a proper meal, and give your creative project time to grow without rushing it.

Yes or no?

Yes, because The Empress is a card of growth and abundance, and what you tend with patience tends to flourish. A single card shows a lean, never a promise of how things turn out.

For yourself

You care for everyone the way you'd want to be cared for, and then you skip yourself. Pleasure and rest are part of being alive. A bath, a nap, a meal you didn't cook standing up. None of that has to be earned.
