Sun, Moon and rising

The three places to start, and why your birth time matters.

Three parts of you

Your Sun sign is the one most people know. It comes from the day you were born, and it speaks to your core self. You can read more on the Sun.

Your Moon sign is where the Moon was when you were born. It speaks to your feelings, your moods and how you take in the world. See the Moon.

Your rising sign, or Ascendant, is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. It is how you step out to meet the world, and it begins the first house.

Why the birth time matters

The Sun changes sign about once a month, so a birthday is enough to know it. The Moon changes sign every two or three days. The rising sign changes about every two hours, so you need the time you were born, and the place.

If you do not know your birth time, that is all right. Your Sun sign still says a lot. I would rather tell you less than guess at a rising sign that might not be yours.

How it was read before

The 1927 book wrote each sign for two kinds of reader at once: people born with the Sun in that sign, and people born with that sign rising.

Its advice was to read both together. The Sun sign shows your true nature. The rising sign shows the nature that appears on the surface. Put the two side by side and you see much more of a person.

Sit with this

Most of us know our Sun sign and stop there. You are more than one sign.

Notice the difference between how you feel inside and how people see you. Both are real, and both are yours.
